【摘要】：This paper experimentally studies the responses to pro-social incentives in an ordinary working environment. We conduct a field experiment in a Chinese prison and introduce real-effort charitable contribution schemes into the inmates’ existing working environment. The main treatment variable is the social relations between the inmates and the beneficiary. We find that during the five-day experiment, the pro-social incentives lead to a 12%--19% rise in productivity. However, the response in general is stronger for prison inmates with high initial productivity, consistent with the relationship between the initial productivity and the cooperative attitudes. We also document that social relations affect the response to pro-social incentives in subtle way, closer relations with the beneficiary might not be associated with larger contribution. This might be explained by the negative group identity associated with the prison inmates.
