Abstract: Chinese firms faced an all-around trade liberalization process during the early 2000s: lower trade barriers from other countries on Chinese final goods, and lower Chinese barriers on other countries` final goods and inputs. Using novel firm-level tariff data for trading Chinese manufacturing firms from 2000 to 2006, this paper disentangles the effects of each type of trade liberalization on Chinese firm-level employment. The exercise distinguishes firms by type (pure processing firm, ordinary non-importer, or ordinary importer) and productivity. For all types of firms, the results show that trade liberalization in final goods from a reduction in either Chinese tariffs or China`s partners tariffs is associated with job destruction in low-productivity firms and job creation in high-productivity firms. The same happens after Chinese input trade liberalization, but only for ordinary importing-exporting _rms. To guide the interpretation of the results, the paper presents a heterogeneous firm model with trade in both tasks and final goods, which identifies the different forces through which each type of trade liberalization affects employment in each type of firm.  
   
報(bào)告人簡(jiǎn)介：余淼杰,北京大學(xué)國(guó)家發(fā)展研究院副院長(zhǎng), 美國(guó)戴維斯加州大學(xué)經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)博士,經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)教授、國(guó)家杰青基金得主、全球經(jīng)濟(jì)管理類前 1%高引論文經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)家。被聯(lián)合國(guó)、亞洲發(fā)展銀行、財(cái)政部、商務(wù)部、國(guó)務(wù)院參事室和多個(gè)地方政府聘為專家顧問(wèn)。主要研究領(lǐng)域?yàn)閲?guó)際貿(mào)易和中國(guó)經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展，曾在 Economic Journal、Review of Economics & Statistics、 Journal of Development Economics、《經(jīng)濟(jì)研究》、《管理世界》、《經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)季刊》等國(guó)內(nèi)外頂級(jí)和一流期刊上發(fā)表論文近 80 篇，出版經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)專著、教材、時(shí)評(píng)隨筆六部。多次得到國(guó)家自科、國(guó)家社科、教育部各類項(xiàng)目資助。發(fā)表論文 曾被英國(guó)皇家經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)會(huì)評(píng)為年度最佳論文，并獲英國(guó)皇家經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)會(huì)獎(jiǎng)，是首位獨(dú)立獲得該獎(jiǎng)的華人經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)家。曾先后四次獲 得全國(guó)國(guó)際貿(mào)易研究最高獎(jiǎng)——安子介國(guó)際貿(mào)易研究獎(jiǎng)、發(fā)展經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)最高獎(jiǎng)——張培剛發(fā)展經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)獎(jiǎng)。著作《加工貿(mào)易與企業(yè)生產(chǎn)率》獲劉詩(shī)白經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)獎(jiǎng)、胡繩青年學(xué)術(shù)研究獎(jiǎng)、全國(guó)貿(mào)易發(fā)展研究獎(jiǎng)。
