Fuel prices and road deaths in Australia and New Zealand

After years of general progress in improving road safety in Australia and New Zealand, road deaths increased again in 2015 and 2016. These were also years of relatively cheap fuel following the fall in the world oil price. This study uses monthly data to examine the role of lower fuel prices in affecting road deaths in Australia and New Zealand. We use an instrumental variable approach and examine effects by type of road user and location. We find that lower fuel prices have played a substantial role in the recent upticks in road deaths. Low fuel prices appear to have contributed to knocking Australia off track to meeting its 2020 road safety target.
